Symcor’s pursuit of environmental leadership influences every facet of the Integrated Statement Services business, from procurement practices to waste management controls, and all aspects of operations in between. As part of Symcor’s commitment to supporting responsible forestry management, our ISS Canada operation has achieved certification with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), with tri-certification inclusive of Sustainable Forestry Initiative Chain of Custody certification (SFI) anticipated in late 2009. In order to reduce the carbon footprint of our plant operations, we purchase a significant quantity of 100% green electricity through Bullfrog Power. The volume of Symcor’s renewable energy purchases currently places us at a Steward level of support. As further evidence of our drive towards environmental sustainability, Symcor’s Tech Avenue location in Mississauga was recently awarded Level 2 Certification with BOMA BESt, the pinnacle achievement within BOMA’s (Building Owners and Managers) Go Green Program. BOMA BESt has been the industry standard for environmental management in commercial buildings in Canada since 2005. Symcor is taking action to ensure environmental impacts are considered in the decision-making and practices of the Integrated Statement Services business. Symcor’s Integrated Statement Services (ISS) sites have achieved tri-certification in the Chain of Custody programs: the Forest Stewardship Council of Canada (FSC), the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). With Chain of Custody tri-certification, Symcor undergoes rigorous audits and follows strict procedures to ensure paper sourced is compliant with the FSC, PEFC, and SFI Chain of Custody requirements. Symcor ISS’s compliancy to the Chain of Custody standards is certified and verified by the accredited certification bodies, Smartwood and BMG Trada Certifiering AB, respectively. Achieving tri-certification in Chain of Custody allows us to offer our clients an environmentally friendly printing choice. The printing industry has recognized Symcor's Integrated Statement Services division — specifically, Tech Ave. — for its environmental stewardship actions. At the Environmental Printing Awards on April 8, Symcor won a silver award for Most Environmentally Progressive Printing Company in the category of 500+ employees.
The annual awards, presented by PrintAction magazine, recognize excellence in environmental stewardship across the Canadian print-based communications supply chain.
Most Environmentally Progressive Printing Company is given based on a company's "holistic strategy to address environmental impact.” Indicators include energy use, pollution prevention, "green tech" and environmental record.
The key accomplishments reflecting our division-wide commitment to make our business more environmentally responsible included:
• Reducing emissions • "Chain of custody" certification • Improving energy efficiency • Recycling
